Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has been highly active in the past few years to bring positive changes in the board exam patterns in their quest to make it realistic, analytics based and allow students to unleash their real potential – which could take into the account student performance over the session year than to limit it what they do in that three hour of test paper.
Keeping that in-tact, CBSE made some major changes in this year for 12th board exams pattern which includes introduction of internal assessment in all subjects to changing format of question paper across subjects. These changes will be observed in the board exam for 2020 – where CBSE has given more weight to the school-based/ internal assessment.
As indicated above, CBSE introduced these changes keeping below in mind:
a. Encourage students to learn and build subject understanding than to focus on mugging
b. Develop reasoning & analytics skills among students
c. Aim towards academic excellence while students go towards achieving better results
d. Lower the stress element and count for whole year student performance
Let us now try to accumulate and spell the changes under five major heads, students should be through with these since should be fully aware of the changes while preparing for the boards:
- Introduction of Internal assessment for additional subjects
From March 2020, CBSE have added a few more subjects under the internal assessment mechanism – such as Maths, Languages, Political Science. 20% marks will be kept for internal assessment for these additional subjects also, with exception to Science subjects & Fine Arts, where it stays unchanged.

- 20 Marks from the school internal evaluations
In class 12th subjects such as Mathematics & English, 10 marks will be from the school examination – example English board exam will be for 80 marks and rest 20 will be considered from the internal evaluations – 10 marks from internal school exams and 10 from internal assessments.
- 20 marks for English Assessment for Speaking & Listening
Taking from our previous point example, the 20 marks for English will be taken from internal assessment – which will be based on the speaking & listening fluency and understanding. Implying the students will be assessed for the speaking & listening skills by external examiners and awarded marks accordingly.
- Increased number of MCQs
25% of all subject questions will be Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) from 2020 board exams – this is one of the most progressive and applauded change. From the 80 marks test, thus 20 will be governed by MCQs, and only 60 marks subjective test for detail answers. This will have a positive impact on student scores and overall grades – also pushing students to focus on understanding than mugging. This also prepares them for the future tests where major focus in on MCQs.
- Increase in number of choice of questions to write
Sticking on the edits in 2019, where 33% increase was made for selection of the type of question from the paper students want to write, the same will be available this session to make sure students have a choice to select and write answers around which they feel more confident and sure – this for sure will have positive impact on results and increase score.

CBSE in their quest to make the exams more practical and time paced, have made some positive edits in the board exam layout and syllabus – which cover five major points indicated above and in addition, a few additional edits, such as removal of a few chapters from the syllabus for 12th Chemistry & Physics.
